THE MOST POWERFUL MAN ON EARTH PLAYS POKER

When asked by an Associated Press journalist to name a hidden talent, Barack Obama said he was 'a pretty good poker player'.
Other ex-presidential poker players include Harry Truman, Ulysses S.Grant, Warren Harding , Andrew Jackson, Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon.

When Obama was senator he used poker partly to form political alliances just as Teddy Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson had done before him.
In 1997 when Obama was on the Illinois senate he and a fellow freshman senator Terry Link started a regular game of poker in Links Springfield living room probably to sway to his side the hill billy soy bean farmers who considered him over-educated and a greenhorn.

It started with five players but in no time had grown to eight developing a long waiting list of prominent democrats, republicans and lobbyists.
Obama told the Chicago tribune last year 'When it turned out that I could sit down . . . and have a beer and watch a game or go out for a round of golf or get a poker game going, I probably confounded some of their expectations.' But this was not in vain. Link discussing the game over the phone said 'You hung up your guns at the door. Nobody talked about their jobs or politics, and certainly no 'influence' was bartered or even discussed. It was boys' night out-a release from our legislative responsibilities.'

Obamas strategic and analytical mind helped him excel at 5 card draw, stud and texas hold em. Yet even with the beer drinking and cigarette smoking, there were unspoken rules of conduct like when a married Springfield lobbyist showed up at a game with a person described as 'an inebriated woman companion who did not acquit herself in a particularly wholesome fashion, ' Obama made a facial gesture showing displeasure. Link says that the lobbyist and his date were 'quickly whisked out of the place.'
Obamas poker tournaments were never for high stakes , typical wins or losses were usually around twenty five dollars and on an odd night a player would lose at the most two hundred dollars.
Link describes Obama as a "calculating" cardplayer, avoiding long-shot draws and patiently waiting for strong starting hands.
Former senator Larry Walsh once said of Obama, 'When Barack stayed in, you pretty much figured he's got a good hand however his maintenance of a rock solid image definitely made it easier for Obama to bluff.'
On the campaign trail, Obama was known to play Uno with his daughters, but no card games involving chips. It may be that his advisers were being cautious. In some forms, poker, after all, remains illegal in much of the country.
